Terms of Use

English

Last updated: 6 November 2026. Version: terms-2026-11-06.

These are the Terms of Use for Aleaf, the food scanning app, also called the Terms and Conditions. They are the agreement between you and us. The short version comes first. The full Terms after it are the ones that count. Where we use a hard word, we explain it.

1. The short version

  • Aleaf is run by ALEAF STUDIOS LTD, a company in London. By creating an account or using Aleaf, you agree to these Terms (section 2).
  • Aleaf is for people aged 18 and over, in every country and for every feature (section 3).
  • Aleaf is a shopping guide, not medical, dietary or nutritional advice. Scores are our own opinion (section 4).
  • The allergy and diet check has limits. It does not read "may contain" warnings printed on the pack. If Aleaf shows no warning, that does not mean a product is free of an allergen. Always read the pack yourself (section 4).
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) helps to read label photos and can make mistakes. Label photos go to Google's Gemini AI service to be read (section 4).
  • Boycott lists are kept by Aleaf. A listing is not a finding by Aleaf that any company did anything (section 7).
  • If you send us a photo, a correction or feedback, you keep what you own and give us a licence to use it to run Aleaf (section 6).
  • Aleaf Pro is a yearly plan. It may not be on sale yet, or in every country. Once it is on sale where you live, you need it to keep scanning after your free allowance ends. It renews until you stop it in the App Store or Google Play. If you live in the UK or the EU, you can also cancel within 14 days of buying. Deleting your Aleaf account does not stop it (section 8).
  • Inviting friends, the leaderboard and any prizes are for adults. Taking part in the prize competition is not free (section 9).
  • We never limit our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything the law does not let us limit (section 15). English law applies, and you keep the consumer protections of the country where you live (section 18).
  • You can delete your account in the app at any time (section 14). Questions? Email support@aleafapp.com.

2. Who we are and what these Terms are

Who we are

Aleaf is run by ALEAF STUDIOS LTD, company number 17401876. Our registered office is 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ. In these Terms, "we", "us" and "our" mean ALEAF STUDIOS LTD. Email us at support@aleafapp.com. You can also write to us at our registered office.

These Terms are a contract between you and ALEAF STUDIOS LTD. Apple and Google are not parties to it (section 17). We are a business. You are a consumer if you use Aleaf for personal reasons and not for a business.

Words we use

  • Aleaf means the Aleaf mobile app and the website at aleafapp.com.
  • Label photo means a photo of an ingredient list or nutrition table that you take or choose and send for reading.
  • Your choices means the allergies, diets and boycott lists you set in Aleaf.
  • Aleaf Pro is the yearly plan in section 8. Its three yearly prices are called price steps: Seed, Sprout and Tree.
  • The Prize rules are the official rules of a prize competition (section 9).
  • The Aleaf Invite Competition is the prize ranking for people who invite friends, run under the Prize rules (section 9).

What these Terms cover

These Terms cover your use of Aleaf. They work together with:

  • the Prize rules. If they and these Terms say different things about a competition, the Prize rules win;
  • our Privacy Notice (also called our Privacy Policy), which explains how we use your personal information;
  • the delete your account page, which lists what is deleted and what stays; and
  • the terms of the app store you use (section 17).

How you accept these Terms

By creating an account or using Aleaf, you agree to these Terms. Our Privacy Notice explains how we use your personal information, so please read it. Agreeing to these Terms is not the same as giving the separate permissions that the Privacy Notice describes, such as email news or showing your name on the public board. We ask for those on their own. If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use Aleaf. You can stop at any time and delete your account (section 14).

3. Who can use Aleaf

Age

Aleaf is for people aged 18 and over, in every country and for every feature.

If you tell us, or we otherwise learn, that you are under 18, we will close the account and delete the information we hold about it, except the items listed under "What stays after you delete your account" on the delete your account page. Parents and guardians: if you think your child has an Aleaf account, email support@aleafapp.com with the email address on the account.

Using Aleaf as a guest

You can try Aleaf as a guest, without an account. A guest sees full results for a small number of products, and Aleaf keeps a record of them on your phone. After that, Aleaf asks you to create an account or sign in. A guest cannot send label photos, buy Aleaf Pro or join the leaderboard. A guest's choices stay on the phone, and are added to the account if the guest signs up. These Terms apply to guests too.

Your account

You can create an account with your email address and a password, with Google or, on iPhone, with Sign in with Apple. When you have an account:

  • Give us true and up-to-date information. Aleaf asks for the country where you live, so please choose the right one. A phone number is optional.
  • Keep one account for yourself. Do not create extra accounts to get round the free allowance, the checks on invites or the rules of a competition.
  • Keep your login secure. Do not share your password or let anyone else use your account. Tell us at once if you think someone has got into your account.
  • You are responsible for what happens under your account, unless it was our fault, or someone used it without your permission and you told us promptly. Do not pretend to be someone else.

Where Aleaf is available

Aleaf may not be available in every country, and it works on iPhones and Android phones that the app store lists as compatible. The app has text in 37 languages. That does not mean every feature is open everywhere: for example, Sign in with Apple is on iPhone only, the leaderboard is open only in the countries named in the Prize rules, and Aleaf Pro cannot be bought where the app store does not sell it. Most of Aleaf needs an internet connection.

4. What Aleaf does and does not do

What Aleaf is

Aleaf helps you compare foods and read labels. You scan a barcode, and Aleaf shows a score and information about the product. Aleaf looks in its own catalogue first. If the product is not there, Aleaf looks it up in an open food database. If you are signed in, you can also send a label photo to be read, and the products you scan are saved to My List. You can tell Aleaf your allergies, diets and boycott choices so that it personalises your results.

Scores, and what Good, Okay and To Watch mean

Aleaf gives most products a score from 0 to 100. A higher score means a better everyday choice on our method. Scores come from Aleaf's own method. They are a guide for comparing products, not a statement about your health. Some scores come with a short label such as "Great choice", "Good choice", "Okay in moderation" or "Best avoided". These words describe a score range. They are our opinion, not advice.

Aleaf also marks ingredients, additives and some other items as Good, Okay or To Watch. Good means our method rates the item well. Okay means it sits in the middle. To Watch means our method sees a reason to look more closely. None of these labels is a finding that something is harmful.

In general terms, the score comes from four checks: nutrition, how processed the product is, additives and ingredients. Some count for more than others. If a check has no data, we leave it out instead of guessing. A few things hold a score down however good the rest looks, such as heavily processed foods, sugary drinks, a lot of sugar or an additive in the top concern tier of our method. We may change the method, so the same product can get a different score later. Newer versions of the app explain the method under Scoring method, in the menu on a result.

A low score does not mean a food is unfit to eat. If food scores affect your wellbeing, please stop using them and talk to a doctor or another health professional.

The NOVA group estimate

NOVA is a way to group foods by how processed they are. The open food database gives a NOVA group for many products. When a product has none, Aleaf estimates one from the ingredient list, using AI. An estimate is our best guess and can be wrong.

Alcohol is Not rated

Aleaf does not rate alcohol. If you scan an alcoholic drink, Aleaf tells you that it does not rate alcohol and gives the drink no score. We call this Not rated.

Allergy and diet checks, and their limits

Aleaf checks the allergies and diets it covers against the ingredient list it holds for a product. It does not read "may contain" warnings printed on the pack. If Aleaf shows no warning, that does not mean a product is free of an allergen, because Aleaf may not be able to tell. Always read the pack yourself, especially if you have an allergy. Aleaf gives general information. It is not medical, dietary or nutritional advice.

Please understand the limits of the check:

  • Aleaf covers only the allergies and diets that the app offers when you set your choices. At the time of writing, these are peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, gluten, soy, shellfish, eggs and sesame, and the vegan, vegetarian, keto, pescatarian and pork free diets. Aleaf does not check for other allergens, such as fish, celery, mustard, lupin, molluscs or sulphites.
  • Aleaf looks in the ingredient list for words from a fixed list for each allergy and diet. For shellfish, for example, the words include shrimp, crab, lobster and prawn. A product can therefore contain an ingredient that is not on the list. For products whose ingredients are not in English, the list is translated first, using AI, so a match can be missed.
  • Aleaf does not read other advisory lines on the pack either, such as "made in a factory that also handles nuts".
  • Aleaf uses AI to double-check possible matches. That step can remove a possible match, and it can be wrong, so a warning you would expect may not show.
  • The ingredient list we hold can be missing, out of date, misread or different from the pack in your hand.
  • When Aleaf finds a match, it shows a warning such as "Warning: contains". In a few cases, it shows "May contain". "All checked" only means that Aleaf has finished sorting the ingredients into Good, Okay and To Watch. It is not an all-clear. If Aleaf shows no allergy or diet warning, that only means it found no match in the ingredient list it holds.

Do not rely on Aleaf alone if an allergic reaction could be serious. Read the pack every time you buy. Ask the maker if you are not sure. If you have a medical condition or a special diet, follow the advice of your doctor, dietitian or allergy specialist.

Not medical advice

Aleaf is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent any medical condition, and it is not a substitute for advice from a doctor, dietitian or allergy specialist.

Artificial intelligence

Aleaf uses artificial intelligence (AI) to read label photos and to help work out some product details, such as how processed a food is. When you send a label photo, it is sent to Google's Gemini AI service, through Google Firebase, to be read. AI can make mistakes, so check the pack.

What Google does with your label photos is set by Google's own terms for that service.

You can read Google's terms for Gemini. If Aleaf cannot read a label photo, or is not sure of its reading, the photo may be sent to our team as a correction so that a person can check it. Our team may send it to Gemini again. Aleaf also uses AI to translate ingredient names, to estimate the NOVA group, to double-check possible allergy matches, and to help write some notes shown in the app. We cannot promise that a person has checked every AI result. Text in languages other than English was translated with the help of AI and may contain mistakes. English is the reference.

Where product information comes from

Product information comes from Aleaf's own catalogue, from an open food database, from photos and corrections sent by people who use Aleaf, and, for some notes, from public sources. It can be missing, wrong or out of date. A barcode can bring up a different product from the one in your hand, and some products are not in Aleaf yet. The open food database says its data can contain errors and must not be used for medical purposes. We say the same about Aleaf.

Notes such as "Beyond the Label" give general information about ingredients like the ones on the label. They are not test results for the product in your hand, and they do not change its score.

Availability and changes

Aleaf is free to download. We try to keep it running, but we cannot promise that it will always be available or free of errors. We may change, pause or stop parts of it, as section 16 explains.

5. Your choices and what you tell us

You decide whether to tell Aleaf about your allergies, diets and boycott choices. The boycott lists are off until you switch them on. You can change or remove your choices at any time in Profile.

Your choices can show things about your health, your beliefs or your views. That makes them sensitive. We use them to personalise your results. Our Privacy Notice says who can see them and how long we keep them.

You can also add an optional age range to your profile. If you join the leaderboard, you may be asked a few other questions (section 9). You never have to answer them to use Aleaf, because you never have to join the leaderboard. Please keep your choices up to date, because Aleaf can only work with what you tell it.

6. Photos, corrections, reports and feedback you send us

What you can send

You can send Aleaf label photos to be read, corrections to a product's details (photo, name, brand, ingredients or nutrition), new products, reports (for example, about a wrong product), messages about a boycott result, and feedback. A feedback message can have up to five photos. In this section, all of this is "your content".

Your promises

When you send your content, you promise that:

  • you took the photo, or you have the right to share it;
  • it shows a product, a pack or a label and nothing else. In particular, do not send photos of people, faces, children, documents, addresses or anyone's personal information;
  • it is not unlawful, hateful, threatening, sexual, harassing, misleading, defamatory or abusive, and does not break anyone's rights, such as copyright; and
  • it has no virus, spam or advertising in it.

Who can see what you send

Some of your content is seen by other people. A photo or detail we accept for a product becomes part of the shared product record, which anyone can see, even without an Aleaf account. A shared product record can also hold a code that identifies the account that added a detail. The code is not your name. The delete your account page says what happens to it when you delete your account. Photos you send as corrections can also be seen by other people signed in to Aleaf. Do not send anything you would not want others to see.

How we handle corrections

We check a correction to an existing product detail before it changes the shared product. If a product has no ingredients or nutrition on file, a photo you send may be read by AI and shown straight away, before a person has checked it. We may change, reject or remove any content. We may stop an account from sending corrections if it breaks these Terms.

The licence you give us

You keep ownership of your content. You give us a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to use, store, copy, resize and show it, to read it with AI, and to adapt it as needed, so that we can run, improve and protect Aleaf. That includes showing it to anyone as part of the shared product record. The companies that help us run Aleaf can use it for us, within the same limits. We use it only for those purposes.

The licence lasts for as long as your content is in Aleaf. If you delete your account, it carries on for content that has become part of the shared product record, and for reports and messages that we keep as a record. The delete your account page lists what stays. Ideas and feedback you give us are free for us to use. Nothing in these Terms limits your rights over your personal information. Our Privacy Notice explains them.

Reporting illegal content and copyright problems

If you think something on Aleaf is illegal, or breaks your rights, email support@aleafapp.com and tell us where you saw it and why. You can also report a problem from a product's result in the app. We look at reports as soon as we reasonably can. If we think something is illegal, we may remove it straight away. Otherwise, a person checks it against these Terms and may approve, change, hold or remove it, or take no action. We apply these rules the same way to everyone.

To report a copyright problem, email support@aleafapp.com with your name and contact details, what the work is, where it appears in Aleaf, a statement that you own it or act for the owner and that you believe the use is not allowed, and your typed signature.

If we remove something

If we remove or restrict your content or your account, we tell you what we did and the rule behind it, where we can. You can email us to ask us to look again, and a person at Aleaf will do so.

7. Boycott information

What the boycott lists are

Aleaf offers four boycott lists that you can switch on: Boycott for Palestine, Mondelez, Nestle and Kellogg's. They are off until you switch them on. When a list is on, Aleaf tells you if a brand or company on the product appears on it.

Boycott information comes from a public dataset and from lists that Aleaf keeps itself. A listing means that a brand appears on one of these lists. It is not a finding by Aleaf that any company did anything, and the choice to act on it is yours. Some entries in the Boycott for Palestine list start from a public dataset, which we credit in section 11. Other entries, and the Mondelez, Nestle and Kellogg's lists, were added by Aleaf.

Limits of the lists

Lists can contain mistakes. A name can be shared by unrelated products, and ownership of a brand can change. "Not on the list" does not mean a company has no controversy. An entry that we are checking may not show at all. Aleaf compares the brand and company names printed on the product with the names on the list. It ignores endings such as Ltd or SA, and it uses other names for the same brand that we have approved. It does not match part of a name, so a product can be missed or matched wrongly.

Brand names belong to their owners, and no brand is connected with Aleaf or endorses it. We use brand names only to identify products. We do not take payment to add, keep or remove an entry.

If you think an entry is wrong, or you speak for a brand

Email support@aleafapp.com with the brand, the product, what is wrong, any evidence, and how to reach you. We will look at it. We decide whether to keep an entry with a note of its source, correct it, hold it or remove it. To hold an entry means to stop it showing to shoppers without deleting it.

While we look into a complaint, we may hold or remove an entry.

8. Aleaf Pro

Aleaf Pro is a paid yearly plan. It may not be on sale yet, or in every country. The rules for buying it apply once it is on sale where you live and you choose to buy it. Aleaf already counts scans for the free allowance described below, so that the count is right when the allowance starts to apply to you.

The short version of Aleaf Pro

Aleaf Pro is a yearly plan that renews until you stop it. You buy it in the App Store or Google Play, and Apple or Google takes the payment under its own terms. These Terms apply to what you get with Aleaf Pro, and we are responsible for it. You stop the renewal in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. If you stop it, you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for. Apple or Google decides refund requests made under the store's own policies. If you live in the UK or the EU, you also have a legal right to cancel within 14 days of buying (below). Your legal rights are not affected.

What you get

Aleaf Pro lets you keep scanning products after your free allowance has ended, with the features on the Pro screen when you buy and improvements to them. We may sell some new features separately. If we do, we will say clearly what Aleaf Pro includes. Aleaf Pro is for personal use. We may stop automatic or commercial use, such as bulk scanning by software.

The free allowance

Once Aleaf Pro is on sale where you live, you can use Aleaf free for a limited number of products or days. When your free allowance ends, Aleaf tells you and shows Aleaf Pro. The store shows the price before you buy. The three price steps give the same access.

The allowance is a number of different products, or a number of days since you started using Aleaf, whichever comes first. Scanning a product again does not use it up. Alcohol and products Aleaf cannot find do not count. It is counted for your phone and for your account, and guest scans on the phone can count too. Deleting your account, or signing in with a different account, does not start it again on the same phone. We may change the allowance for new users. Nothing is charged unless you buy Aleaf Pro.

When your allowance ends, scanning stops until you buy Aleaf Pro, and some other parts of the app, such as your lists, may need it too. You can still use Profile and Settings, read these Terms, restore or manage a purchase, sign out and delete your account.

The device record

To count the free allowance fairly, Aleaf makes a code from an identifier on your phone. The code cannot be turned back into the identifier. For each product that counts, Aleaf sends the code and the product's barcode to our servers, and keeps a record of the code, the products counted and the accounts used on that phone. We keep this record until about 400 days after the last scan counted on the phone. If you delete your account, we take your account out of the record, but the count of products stays, so that your allowance does not start again. Our Privacy Notice has more.

Buying Aleaf Pro

To buy Aleaf Pro, you need an Aleaf account and you must be 18 or over. A guest cannot buy. You choose a price step, tap the buy button and confirm in the store's own window. When you confirm, you agree to pay the price shown. The store takes the payment and shows the price, including any tax it adds, before you buy. Prices differ between countries. We never see your card details.

One store plan works with one Aleaf account at a time, and a plan shared through a store's family sharing does not give access. Please do not share your plan or your account. If you change phone, use Restore purchases in the app.

The three price steps

The yearly plan has three prices, called Seed, Sprout and Tree. All three give exactly the same access. The names are labels for the prices, not different features, and nothing costs less than Seed. The price you choose is the price that renews each year. Your step does not give you a better place on the leaderboard.

Renewal

Aleaf Pro renews each year until you stop it, at the price of your step that the store shows then. There is no minimum period beyond the year you have paid for. The store charges you shortly before the end of each year. Your renewal date is in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings.

How to stop the renewal

You can stop Aleaf Pro from renewing at any time in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. In Aleaf, Manage subscription opens the right page. There is no fee, and you do not need to give notice or a reason. If you stop the renewal, you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for. Stopping the renewal does not by itself refund the year you have already paid for. Only the store can stop the store from charging you, so an email to us does not stop a renewal. Deleting your Aleaf account or the app does not stop it either. Stop the renewal first if you want to stop paying. Your separate right to cancel within 14 days of buying is explained below.

Refunds

A refund is paid by the store that took your payment, so the route depends on where you bought Aleaf Pro. On the App Store, only Apple can refund a purchase, and Apple decides refund requests under its own policies. We cannot refund an App Store purchase ourselves. To ask Apple, use Report a Problem on Apple's website. On Google Play, we can refund a purchase ourselves, through Google Play, or you can ask Google in your order history in Google Play. For either store you can email support@aleafapp.com and we will help with your request and support it where we can, but we cannot promise what a store decides. If a store refunds a purchase, your Aleaf Pro access ends. We count refunds for each account and phone to spot abuse, and after a second refund the account is flagged for a person to look at. Your legal rights are not affected.

Your right to cancel within 14 days

If you live in the UK or the EU, you have a legal right to cancel within 14 days of buying Aleaf Pro, without giving a reason. This is separate from stopping the renewal. To use it, email support@aleafapp.com and say that you are cancelling. You do not need any special words. Also stop the renewal in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings, so that you are not charged again. We will tell you the steps for your store. If you bought on Google Play and cancel within the 14 days, we will refund you through Google Play within 14 days of your telling us. If you bought on the App Store, only Apple can refund the purchase, and Apple decides. In that case, also ask Apple, using Report a Problem on Apple's website or, within the 14 days, Apple's way to withdraw from a purchase in the purchase history of your Apple Account. We will support your request where we can, but we cannot refund an App Store purchase ourselves and we cannot promise what Apple decides. Your legal rights are not affected. If you live somewhere else, the law where you live may give you a similar right.

If you cancel within the 14 days, you can ask for a refund of what you paid, as the paragraphs above explain.

If the price or the plan changes

We will not change the price or terms of a year of Aleaf Pro that you have already paid for, unless the law or a store rule requires it. A new price applies only from your next renewal. The store tells you about a price rise under its own rules before it applies, and you can stop the renewal before it does. If we make a change that makes Aleaf Pro clearly worse for you, you can end your plan within 30 days of the change taking effect or of our telling you about it, whichever is later. If you do, you can ask for a refund of the part of the year you have not used. If you bought on Google Play, we will refund it through Google Play. If you bought on the App Store, only Apple can refund it, and Apple decides, so ask Apple as the Refunds part above explains, and we will support your request where we can. If we change how you cancel, or how refunds work, for Aleaf Pro, we will try to tell you in the app before the change takes effect. This does not limit your legal rights.

Discount codes, and Pro we give you

If we or a partner offer a discount code, the code only picks a discount offer in the store, and the store takes the payment. A code may give a lower price for the first year only, and then the plan renews at the full price of its step. The terms of each offer are shown with the offer. Pro that we give you for free, for example as a prize, is not a purchase. It ends on its end date and does not turn into a paid plan unless you buy one.

If a payment fails, and when Aleaf Pro ends

If the store cannot take payment, you may get a short grace period, and after that your access may pause until the problem is fixed. The app tells you when this happens.

When your plan ends or you stop the renewal, you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for. After that, your account stays and your free allowance does not start again. We keep records of purchases, such as the plan, the dates and the store's order numbers. Our Privacy Notice says how long.

9. Inviting friends, the leaderboard and prizes

Inviting friends, the leaderboard and any prizes are for adults. They may not be switched on in your app or your country yet. This section applies where they are.

Inviting friends

Every signed-in Aleaf account can have a personal invite code and an invite link. The link is aleafapp.com/r/ followed by your code. You share it through your phone's own share menu. Aleaf does not read your contacts and does not see who you send it to.

A friend can add your code by opening your link, or by typing or pasting the code. In some cases Aleaf may find the code by itself. On iPhone, it can read your clipboard once to look for an invite code. On Android, it can read the install link details from Google Play. Our Privacy Notice explains more. When someone creates an Aleaf account and adds your code within 7 days of creating that account, we record that you invited them. An account can add one code only, and cannot add its own. You can see how many friends joined with your code and how many of them count toward the leaderboard. You cannot see who they are. When someone adds your code, you may be told that someone joined. If you add a friend's code and later buy Aleaf Pro, and counting is open, the person who invited you may be told that a friend now counts. We never tell them your name or which plan you bought.

Sharing your link

When you share your invite link:

  • Share it only with people you know, and in ways that follow the law and the rules of the app or website you use. Do not send unwanted bulk messages.
  • Do not offer friends money, gifts, discounts or any other reward to join Aleaf or to buy Aleaf Pro.
  • If you post your link in public, say clearly that you may receive a reward if people join, and label the post as an advert.
  • Do not pretend to be Aleaf, and do not make false claims about Aleaf or its prizes.
  • Do not press anyone under 18 to buy Aleaf Pro, and do not ask anyone for a store rating or review in return for joining or buying.
  • Do not sell, swap or trade invite codes.

Checks and fair play

To keep invites fair, we compare the plan status of you and the friend you invited, and run device and email checks that tell us whether two accounts belong to one person. We also watch for patterns such as a very large number of invites in one day. Some checks are automatic. If we reasonably believe that these Terms or the Prize rules were broken, we may stop an invite from counting, remove you from the leaderboard, hold back a prize or ask for a prize back, as the Prize rules explain. If an automatic check affects you and you think it is wrong, email support@aleafapp.com. We will tell you the reason without naming your friend, and a person will look at it again.

No promise of a reward, and the Prize rules

Inviting friends does not promise you anything. We do not promise that a friend will join or count, or that you will receive any reward or prize. A friend can stop counting at any time, for example after a refund. You do not need to take part in any competition to use Aleaf or to buy Aleaf Pro, and buying Aleaf Pro does not buy you a better place.

From time to time we may run a prize ranking for people who invite friends. It is for adults. We publish the Prize rules before a season starts, and they decide who can take part and what the prizes are.

Taking part is not free, because you need an annual Aleaf Pro plan, and so do the friends who count. Prizes are available only through the Aleaf Invite Competition and only on the terms of the Prize rules. We may change, pause or stop inviting, the leaderboard or the competition as the Prize rules allow, and we will tell you in the app.

The leaderboard: what it is

The leaderboard is an optional ranking of people who invite friends. It is open only to people who:

  • are 18 or over;
  • hold an annual Aleaf Pro plan of their own;
  • live in a country where we have opened it; and
  • have joined by tapping Join on the Invite Friends card and ticking two boxes.

You do not need to join the leaderboard to use Aleaf. We rank members by the number of invited friends who count. The Prize rules explain what counts. You can leave at any time. For now, the Join step is in English only. When you join, Aleaf may ask you three short questions, once only: your age range, your gender and how you heard about Aleaf. It does not ask if you have already answered them, or if your profile already holds all three answers. When it asks, you need to answer each question before you can join, but "Prefer not to say" counts as an answer, and when you choose it we store no answer for that question. If your profile already has an age range, that question starts filled in, and Aleaf keeps it unless you change it. Other users never see your answers.

What is shown, and to whom

  • Only you can see your own rank in the app, except on the public board (below). Your rank shows as an exact place for the top places and as a band, such as "Top 25", for everyone else. A small number of Aleaf staff can see exact ranks, because they run and check the competition.
  • The public board is separate. It is off unless you turn it on, with its own tick. If you turn it on and finish in a winning place with at least the number of counted friends set in the Prize rules, it shows your place, display name and country flag. Anyone signed in to Aleaf can see it and may copy it. It may not be open at all.
  • We delete your display name when you switch the public board off, leave the leaderboard, are removed, or delete your account. We cannot take back copies other people have already made.

Display names

Your display name is content that you provide. We never fill it in from your account.

  • Use a nickname of 2 to 20 characters. Do not use your full real name, your email address or a phone number.
  • Do not use a name that pretends to be Aleaf, our team, another person or a brand. Do not use links, contact details, offensive, hateful, threatening, sexual or harassing words, or anyone's personal information.

We check every new or changed display name before it appears. We may refuse, change, hold or remove any name, and we may remove you from the board. When you turn the public board on, you allow Aleaf to show your details as described here for as long as it stays on.

Reports and complaints about the board

Anyone who can see the board can report a display name, with a reason (name or other) and an optional note of up to 200 characters. If three different members report the same entry, it comes off the board while a person decides. Section 6 explains what we do with reports. You can also complain by emailing support@aleafapp.com about content you think is illegal, about us not following these Terms, about something we took down, or about being removed or restricted. We aim to reply within 14 days. If we change, hold or remove your display name, or remove you from the leaderboard, we tell you in the app and, where we can, say which rule applied and why. You can ask us to look again.

Country and leaving

We use the country in your profile on the day you join to decide whether you can take part. It is fixed at that moment. If you move to another country, you can leave and join again (at most 3 times in any 30 days). You can leave the leaderboard at any time. Leaving takes your name and rank off the board and ends your eligibility for a prize. We keep a short record that you agreed to the Prize rules, with the date and your country, for a limited time, as our Privacy Notice explains. Your invite code and the friends you invited stay as they are.

Removal and prizes

If we remove you from the leaderboard, you cannot join again. Removal does not close your account or end your Aleaf Pro plan. We can ask for a prize back within 12 months after it was given if it was given because a rule in these Terms or the Prize rules was broken. Using your normal right to cancel or get a refund is never cheating. The only effect is that the plan stops counting.

10. Using Aleaf properly

You agree not to:

  • use Aleaf for anything unlawful, for business use without our written permission, or in a way that harms others;
  • break into, disrupt or overload Aleaf, or get round its security or limits, including the free allowance and the checks on invites;
  • copy, scrape or harvest Aleaf, its scores, product records or other data, by software or by hand at scale, or use them to train AI models, without our written permission (this does not limit your rights to information from the open food database under its own licence, section 11);
  • reverse engineer or take apart the app, except where the law allows it;
  • create fake, duplicate or automatic accounts, or use someone else's identity;
  • use invites, codes or the leaderboard to cheat, for example by inviting yourself, buying a plan in order to count and then getting it refunded, or paying people to join;
  • send content that breaks section 6, or make false or abusive reports;
  • try to get into another person's account, or sell, rent or share your account or your plan;
  • use Aleaf's name, scores or verdicts in advertising or on packaging, or say that Aleaf approves a product, without our written permission; or
  • use a discount code that you were not given, or that has been changed.

If you find a security problem in Aleaf, please tell us at support@aleafapp.com before you tell anyone else. If you break these rules, we may act as section 14 explains.

11. Our property, open data and credits

Our rights, and your licence to use Aleaf

Aleaf and the people who license things to us own the rights in the app, its design, the hand-drawn artwork and illustrations, text, scores, the method behind them, our name and our logos. Some things in Aleaf belong to other people and stay under their own licences or with their owners: what you send us (section 6), information and photos from an open food database, brand names, and open-source software and fonts. We give you a personal, non-exclusive licence to use the app on your own devices, for as long as these Terms apply to you. You may not copy, sell, rent or pass on Aleaf, or use our name or artwork, except as these Terms allow or with our written permission. What you send us stays yours (section 6).

Open data and credits

Some product information comes from an open food database, which is available under the Open Database Licence. Product photos from its contributors have their own licence, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. The credit and a link to the licence terms are in the "Product information and credits" paragraph of our Privacy Notice. The Boycott for Palestine list starts from a public dataset by TechForPalestine, with entries and texts added by Aleaf.

Brand names and other names

Brand names, trade marks, packaging designs and the names of organisations belong to their owners. We use them only to identify products or say where information comes from. No brand or organisation is connected with Aleaf or endorses it, unless we say so.

12. Other companies and links

Aleaf uses services from other companies, including Google (Firebase, Gemini, Google Sign-In and Google Play), Apple (Sign in with Apple and the App Store), an analytics provider, an email delivery provider and an open food database. Our Privacy Notice says what each one receives. When you deal with them directly, for example when you sign in with Google or Apple, their terms apply too. We are not responsible for the websites or services of other companies that you use directly, or for what is on websites that we link to. A link is not an endorsement. We stay responsible to you for the companies we choose to help us run Aleaf, and for the information we ourselves send to them.

13. Privacy, notifications and messages

Privacy

Our Privacy Notice explains what personal information we collect, why, who sees it, how long we keep it and what your rights are. Please read it. If you think we are using your information wrongly, see section 18.

Notifications and your inbox

Aleaf sends messages to your inbox in the app and by push notification. They cover your account, the results of corrections and reports you send, products you have scanned or saved that we have updated, and activity such as invites. We do not send promotional messages by push notification. You can turn push notifications off in your phone settings or in Aleaf. If you sign in again, check your notification choice in Settings.

Your inbox messages stay until you delete them. Inbox messages are not deleted when you delete your account.

Email

You can choose to get news from us by email, with a box when you sign up with an email address or in Settings. You can switch it off in Settings at any time. We also email you when you need it for your account, such as a password reset, and to reply to your messages. If you hide your email address from us, for example with Apple's Hide My Email, some of our emails may not reach you.

14. Suspending and ending

You can leave at any time

You can delete your account in the app: open Profile and tap Delete my account. This starts at once and cannot be undone. It deletes your profile, sign-in account, My List, Favourites, list of corrections, invite and leaderboard records and email preference records. Some information stays, and we list it under "What stays after you delete your account" on the delete your account page. Deleting your account does not stop an Aleaf Pro plan: stop the renewal in your App Store or Google Play settings. If you cannot use the app to delete your account, email us from the address on your account. We will reply within one month of confirming that you are the account holder, and tell you what we can do.

When we can suspend or close your account

We may suspend or close your account, remove content, or limit a feature if:

  • you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms or the Prize rules;
  • you use Aleaf in a way that is unlawful, fraudulent or harmful to others;
  • you are under 18;
  • the law, a court, Apple or Google requires us to; or
  • we stop offering Aleaf (see below).

Where we can, we tell you what we are doing and why before we do it, and give you a chance to explain. We may act at once when the matter is urgent, such as a threat to other people, or when the law stops us telling you. After we act, you can email support@aleafapp.com to ask us to look again.

If we close your account or end your Aleaf Pro plan for a reason that is not your fault, you can ask for a refund of the part of the paid year that you have not used. If you bought on Google Play, we will refund it through Google Play. If you bought on the App Store, only Apple can refund it, and Apple decides, so we will tell you how to ask Apple and support your request where we can. If we decide to stop offering Aleaf altogether, we will give you reasonable notice in the app.

What carries on

After your account ends, these parts carry on: the licence in section 6 for content that is part of the shared product record or that we keep as a record; our rights in what we own (section 11); anything either of us already owes the other; sections 15 and 18; and any part that by its nature is meant to carry on.

15. Our responsibility to you

What we never limit

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for:

  • death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
  • fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or
  • anything else that the law does not allow us to limit or exclude.

Nothing in these Terms takes away the legal rights you have as a consumer, or your rights over your personal information. Our Privacy Notice explains those.

Your legal rights

The law gives you rights when you buy digital content or online services, for example Aleaf Pro. In plain words, digital content must be of satisfactory quality, fit for its purpose and as described, and a service must be provided with reasonable care and skill. What we tell you about Aleaf can become part of the contract. If something is wrong, you may be entitled to a repair or replacement, a reduction in price or a refund, and if faulty digital content damages your device, to a repair or compensation. The law where you live may give you similar or extra rights. These Terms do not take them away.

Our responsibility for loss

If we break these Terms, or we do not use reasonable care and skill, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result. Loss or damage is foreseeable if it was obvious that it would happen, or if you and we both knew when you agreed to these Terms that it might happen. We are not responsible for loss or damage that is not foreseeable. We are not responsible for lost profit, business or contracts, because Aleaf is for personal use. None of this limits what is said under "What we never limit".

Allergies and health

Aleaf cannot see the pack in your hand, and recipes change, so read the pack every time you buy (section 4). That advice does not limit our responsibility under the law. If we are negligent and you are injured, "What we never limit" applies.

16. Changes to Aleaf and to these Terms

Changes to Aleaf

We keep improving Aleaf. We may change, add or remove features and change the method behind the scores. We will only make a change that makes Aleaf worse for you for one of these reasons: to follow the law, a court order or a store rule; to protect the security of Aleaf; to stop abuse; or because a service we rely on changes. If a change makes Aleaf Pro clearly worse for you, section 8 says what you can do.

Changes to these Terms

We may change these Terms only for these reasons: to follow the law, a court order, a regulator or a store rule; to add, change or remove a feature or service; to change the price or terms of Aleaf Pro from your next renewal, as section 8 explains; to fix a mistake or make the wording clearer without changing what it means; to protect the security of Aleaf or stop abuse; or because a company we rely on changes its service. Every time we do, the version and date at the top change.

We will also try to tell you in the app about an important change before it takes effect.

A change that is worse for you does not apply to a year of Aleaf Pro that you have already paid for, unless the law or a store rule requires it. If you do not agree to a change, you can stop using Aleaf and delete your account at any time. Deleting your account is free.

The Prize rules have their own version number and rules for change. We tell you in the app when they change. A change never lowers a prize or moves the closing date for people already taking part, except where the Prize rules allow it for the law, a store rule, fraud or something outside our control. The app may ask you to accept a new version before you can claim a prize.

17. Apple and Google

These Terms are between you and us only, not between you and Apple or Google. We, not Apple or Google, are responsible for Aleaf and what is in it.

If you use Aleaf on an iPhone or another Apple device

  • Licence: we give you a non-transferable licence to use Aleaf on Apple devices that you own or control, as the Usage Rules in the App Store Terms of Service allow.
  • Support: we, not Apple, are responsible for support and maintenance of Aleaf.
  • Warranty: if Aleaf does not meet a warranty that applies to it, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app, if you paid one. To the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty duty. We, not Apple, are responsible for any other claim, loss, liability, damage, cost or expense caused by a failure to meet a warranty.
  • Claims: we, not Apple, deal with any claim about Aleaf or your use of it, such as a product liability claim, a claim that Aleaf does not meet a legal requirement, or a consumer protection or privacy claim.
  • Intellectual property: if someone claims that Aleaf infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, investigate, defend, settle and discharge the claim.
  • Legal compliance: you confirm that you are not in a country that is under a US government embargo, or that the US government has named a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any US government list of banned or restricted parties.
  • Our details: ALEAF STUDIOS LTD, 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ, support@aleafapp.com. Send questions and claims to us.
  • Other terms: you must also follow any third-party terms that apply when you use Aleaf, such as your mobile data provider's terms.
  • Third-party beneficiary: Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms for your use of Aleaf on Apple devices. When you accept these Terms, Apple can enforce them against you.

If you use Aleaf on Android

Google is not a party to these Terms. Google Play's own terms apply to your downloads, payments and refunds. Google is not responsible for Aleaf, its content or its support. Send questions and claims about Aleaf to us.

Prize competitions

The Aleaf Invite Competition is run by ALEAF STUDIOS LTD only. Apple and Google (including the companies in their groups) do not sponsor, endorse, run or support it, and they have no responsibility for it. Questions about it go to support@aleafapp.com.

18. Complaints, law and courts

Complaints

If you are unhappy with Aleaf or with how we use your information, please tell us at support@aleafapp.com so that we can put it right. We aim to reply within 14 days. If your complaint is about how we use your personal information, we will acknowledge it within 30 days and tell you the outcome. You can also complain to the Information Commission (the ICO), the UK data protection regulator, about how we use your information, at any time. Outside the UK you may also be able to complain to your own data protection or consumer authority.

Which law applies, and where claims can be brought

English law governs these Terms. If you live in England or Wales, the courts of England and Wales can hear a claim. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can bring a claim in the courts of your home nation. If you live in another country, including an EU country, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws there and can bring a claim in the courts where you live. If we bring a claim against you, we will bring it in the courts where you live. These Terms do not make you go to arbitration, and they do not stop you from joining a group claim where the law of your country allows it.

19. General terms

  • Whole agreement. These Terms, the Prize rules (for a competition) and the pages they refer to are the whole agreement between you and us about Aleaf, and replace earlier versions. This does not limit your rights about anything we said or wrote about Aleaf that the law treats as part of the contract, or any claim for fraud.
  • If part of the Terms cannot be enforced. If a court decides that part of these Terms cannot be enforced, the rest stays in force.
  • No waiver. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up.
  • Transfer. We may transfer our rights and duties under these Terms to another company, for example if we sell the business, if that does not reduce your rights. We will tell you. You may not transfer your account or your rights.
  • Other people. Nobody else has rights under these Terms, except Apple as section 17 says.
  • Events outside our control. We are not in breach of these Terms if we are delayed or cannot do something because of an event outside our reasonable control, such as a power cut or a failure of the internet or of an app store. We will tell you if this affects you. This does not affect your legal rights.
  • Notices. We may give you notice in the app or by email to the address on your account. We may also post a general notice on this page, but we will use the app or email for any notice that affects your rights. You can give us notice at support@aleafapp.com or by letter to our registered office.
  • Language. These Terms are written in English. The app has text in 37 languages, but these Terms are only in English for now. If a translation differs from the English version, the English version applies, unless the law where you live says otherwise.
